Professional Responsibility
The professional carries additional moral responsibilities beyond those held by the population in general. Professionals are capable of making and acting on an informed decision in situations that the general public cannot as the general public has not received the relevant training.
This additional knowledge comes with authority and responsibility. The client places trust in the professional on the basis that the service provided will be of benefit to the client. It would be possible for the professional to use his authority to exploit the client. Therefore a guiding code of ethics must be adopted by trained professionals.
Questions arise as to the ethical limits of the professional.s responsibility and how authority should be used in service to the client and society. Many professions have internally enforced codes of practice that members of the profession must follow in order to prevent exploitation of the client and preserve the integrity of the profession. This is not only to the benefit of the client but to the benefit of those belonging to the profession.
Our Code
I will practice and prescribe to the best of my ability for the good of my clients, and to try to avoid harming them.
I will never do deliberate harm to anyone for anyone else's interest.
I will avoid violating the morals of my community.
I will avoid attempting to do things that other specialists can do better.
I will keep the good of the client as the highest priority.
I will avoid conflicts of interest with clients.
